It all happened so suddenly. A midnight team of dicey scientists, an ill-advised, unsanctioned experiment, and a big sloppy 'ba-whoomp' sound when it all went to hell... literally. A lab assistant, the only survivor of the 'event', told you the details not more than an hour ago, before he was crunched to death by what one might describe as huge novelty chattering teeth, but with wings. You only understood about half of the words he used, but the gist was this: A team of college know-it-all physics students decided to try and open a portal to another dimension. Surprisingly, they succeeded. Even more surprising was the creature who poured out of that portal and into our world. It devoured / possessed the science lab's dedicated AI system, then proceeded to feed on the brains of anyone in its general vicinity, popping these kids like blood balloons in the process. The lab guy called it an 'information eating monster'... a 'datavore'. It loved the taste of their knowledge, but went a little nuts trying to process their weird human emotional baggage. Now it's opening portals all over the campus, letting all manner of weird freaky business into this world. Why? You have no idea in the slightest, but you have to stop it none-the-less.
So here you are, third shift maintenance, goopy coveralls and all, running for your life from what appears to be a large lasagne... wielding a hatchet. The only way you can survive the night is to convince this shattered weirdo computer drama demon from another dimension to unlock the doors and let you go home, using the only weapon you have... the power of conversation.
Yeah... you're doomed.
